Field Hockey Goalkeeper

Field Hockey GoalkeeperSizing information and buying guide

The field hockey goalkeeper is under a lot of pressure. You protect the goal, stop the balls from going in and have to be very well protected. On top of that, you are the player who needs to wear the most protection, since you have to stop the ball with your stick or any part of your body. That is why it is so important that the protection is tough (so it does not get damaged) and comfortable (so goalkeepers can move freely and react quickly).

Let’s get started with the kit we need and the size guide!

Helmets
Helmets

The helmet is a very important item that goalkeepers must wear. It protects at all times by covering the head.

Design

They are made of very tough hard plastics, and some models are even made of carbon fibre, also very tough and lighter. All helmets have a steel grille that protects the face area, while also giving us great visibility while we are guarding the goal. In addition, the inside of the helmet contains high-density foam, giving us great lightness and protection. Helmets have an angular design at the top that allows the ball to deflect. All models come with a system of elastic straps to give us a perfect fit and absolute comfort.

Protection

The entire head area is covered with very tough, impact-resistant plastic materials. The face grille gives us maximum protection since it is made of steel and the bars are arranged so that it is impossible for the ball to get through. The inside of the helmet is lined with high-density foam, providing extra protection. The chin is also a point that must be protected, which is why all helmets add foam protection in this area.

Hockey Stick
Hockey Stick

The field hockey goalkeeper stick is the extension of the arm to protect, defend and stop the balls from going into the goal. Goalkeeper sticks need to have a straight shaft, as well as being light and balanced.

Design

There are different types of sticks: the ones with a hook-shaped head, for training, different lengths and the most common ones.

With hook-shaped head sticks we get the advantage of a larger stopping surface.

Training sticks have a more pronounced ‘hook’ curve than the rest. With this stick and the Bobbla ball, goalkeepers train their reflexes and reactions to give their best during matches.

The Shoot Out stick, as its name suggests, is designed for Shoot Outs. It has the maximum allowed length, 41”, and with it we achieve the maximum reach.

The most common sticks have a straight shaft, a length equivalent to your height and a standard head. Player sticks with these features can also be used by goalkeepers!

Composition

The stick composition is essential for goalkeepers. The materials they are made of can give us toughness, lightness, durability and power.

The composition used in goalkeeper sticks is: wood, fibreglass and carbon fibre.

Wooden sticks come coated with a layer of Kevlar for extra toughness. It is the simplest one and is recommended for goalkeepers who are just starting out.

Fibreglass is a tougher and lighter material. Designed for youngsters who already have experience and want to improve on the features of their first stick.

Carbon fibre, in these sticks, comes combined with fibreglass. It is a very tough, light and stiff stick, high performance for elite goalkeepers.

Neck Guard
Neck Guard

The neck guard is a mandatory piece of protection that goalkeepers must wear during matches and training, to avoid possible impacts to the neck and throat area.

There are different types of guards: high-density foam ones or very tough plastic ones.

The first ones are made of high-density foam that wraps around the whole neck. The inside is soft foam to avoid possible chafing and give us great comfort. They have a Velcro fastening at the back that allows a perfect fit.

The second ones are made of very tough plastic, methacrylate, and are very easy to fit, since they have three laces that tie onto the helmet grille, hanging between the helmet and the chest, giving maximum protection to the neck area.

Goalkeeper Gloves
Goalkeeper Gloves

A field hockey goalkeeper’s gloves protect the hands completely. They are large in size, very light and tough. And on top of that, they must let you stop the ball or clear it, protecting you continuously.

Design

The left-hand glove has a flat surface on both sides, designed to clear the balls. The right-hand glove has a rounded, ergonomic shape, with a gap for the field hockey goalkeeper’s stick to pass through. Also, the inside is soft foam to provide great comfort.

Protection

Field hockey goalkeeper gloves are made of high-density foam, providing maximum protection, toughness and lightness for quick movements. In OBO ROBO we find two types of models for goalkeeper gloves: HI-REBOUND and HI-CONTROL.

The Hi-Rebound left-hand glove has a smooth front which gives us great rebound properties. With its squarer edges slightly curved downwards, it lets you deflect the ball in that direction. The Hi-Rebound right-hand glove has great rebound performance, thanks to the foam and special shape.

The Hi-Control left-hand glove has a textured front, which gives us greater control of the ball.

The squarer edges, slightly curved downwards, let the ball go in that direction under control. The Hi-Control right-hand glove is thicker than the rest, providing more protection and letting us face fast balls.

The Hi-Control legguards provide maximum ball control thanks to their dense foams and ensure low wear. The right legguard is narrower and lets us have better mobility; the left legguard is wider and has a different angle to minimise the ball going into the goal.

The Hi-Rebound legguards have a larger surface and a flatter part than the rest of the legguards. With a large rebound zone on the inside, the outer and protruding parts are stiffer, reducing the rebound speed.

Design

Just like the legguards, they are large protection, but totally light. They have a system of straps with fastenings at the back and at the front with a fastening on the sole of the foot that allow an optimal grip and fit. They have a tongue that must be placed behind the legguards. This lets us have great foot mobility and great protection.

In OBO ROBO we find two different types: Hi-Rebound and Hi-Control.

The Hi-Rebound goalkeeper kickers, besides giving us great protection, have 50% more rebound performance.

The straight, flat sides reduce the chance of the ball lifting up. They have a more rounded toe for more acceleration.

The Hi-Control goalkeeper kickers, thanks to the high-density foam, protect us and give us less rebound effect, since the weight has been slightly increased; this way we can control the ball.
